and prevent future complications
Your pet is an easy target for parasites and small insects. Common parasites like ticks, hookworms, fleas and heartworm-carrying mosquitos feed on your pets, potentially infecting them with many dangerous diseases. Discover how these tiny pests can cause big problems.
A nutrition-rich diet is your pet’s first line of defense. Proper daily nutrition is an important factor for keeping your pet healthy, bolstering the immune system and supporting normal development in younger animals. Your pet depends on you to make the right nutrition choices for them, make sure you know how.
Spay & Neuter
Spaying is a common surgical procedure performed on female cats and dogs. The process is called an ovariohysterectomy and involves removing the patient’s uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, rendering the animal incapable of reproduction. Jacaranda Vet Lab’s veterinarians recommend spaying your pet at 5-6 months, depending on your dog’s breed and ideally before the patient’s first heat.
Radiographs valuable information about animal’s bones, gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines, colon), respiratory tract (lungs), heart, and genitourinary system (bladder, prostate). They can be used alone or in conjunction with other diagnostic tools to provide a list of possible causes for an animal’s condition, to identify the exact cause of a problem, and/or to rule out possible problems. As an x-ray beam passes through a patient’s body, the beams are absorbed in different quantities by different types of tissues. Images on radiographic film appear as various shades of grey and reflect the anatomy of the animal. Light areas such as bones absorb more x-rays than darker areas such as the lungs. Interpretation of radiographs requires great skill on the part of the veterinarian. Jacaranda Vet lab uses up to date radiology equipment and an automatic x-ray developer so results are received quickly.
Ultrasonography allows for even greater evaluation of patients internal organs. Most ultrasounds are performed on the pets when they are awake (unfortunately hair has to be shaved away so the transducer can pick up good images). At the time of ultrasonography if an abnormality is seen we often can biopsy the organ and avoid invasive surgery. This will allow a proper treatment protocol to be developed. At the hospital we have fortunately the services of a veterinarian who does only ultrasounds, it is like traveling to a specialist without going anywhere.
